Natasha McGough Hudson

An Open Blog Post to Natasha Hudson, aspiring actress and published thespian,

Can you please explain in plain and simple terms why your published poem "Kek Coklat" is a direct translation from the work of a British poet Roger McGough? At first when a huge fan of his work called me in distress, after browsing through your book in a bookstore and discovering one of her favorite poem is translated into Malay Language without citing the original poet, I was not that convinced. But when I read the McGough version and yours, the similarities is too uncanny for it to be a coincidence.

In your June 18 2007 interview with the Star, you said,

“It wasn’t easy to share my personal collection of poems with the public. It took a lot of courage to share a part of me in this book. It has many memories, personal experiences, dilemmas, sadness and hope.”

You also said,

“Even though the poems were written many years ago, it was only recently that I decided to approach a publisher after encouragement from my family and friends...”

So if you click on the picture below it will lead you to a Roger McGough poem entitled "Cake". Maybe you've read him when you were younger and the impression the poem gave you still lingers?

I don't know where this blog post would lead. It might not even be read. You might get away Scott's free. What I do know is that plagiarism is not right, and this is not the message you would want to teach to young children,

“I guess it is my way of encouraging children and adults to see poetry as something lively and entertaining, which everybody would enjoy at any time,” she enthuses.

Yours Truly,

Jannah Raffali

P/s If so happened Roger McGough is a distant cousin, whom you grew up with and share all your secret hopes and dreams, feel free to kick me in the balls, I would write an open apology blog post and eat Cake.

hehe having ur cake and eat it too is a normal english punye saying la kan. but in malay the meaning is not instantly identifiable. eat eachother? hmm sure ke this is a children's poem? hehe. dah email ke ms hudson ni? hehe

Dila said...

Wow. That is a serious allegation. I wouldn't mind so much in a blog posts. But this is published work y'all. Where she get untung n money n such. And no credits whatsoever.

It is too much of a resemblance to be called coincidence. If its about life translated to eating choc cake and such, but each wording can be translatable to the original poem from McGough. I wouldn't mind if the ways and rhymes or whatever (I am lacking in knowledge of poems) have the same style of him, but this is something like a schoolchildren would do, directly translate from something.

Had you send an email to Ms. Hudson herself?

I can't comment further as such as you, unless there is an explanation to this. It should be interesting to know if anyone else find this out?

(Agree with Acat, And in Malay it does have a slight lewd feelings to it)

When you're writing something that alludes to an idiom, you must be able to draw a form of bond between that idiom and the context you're writing in.

Only a person who is aware of its original context may derive its desired meaning an intent i.e. you can't have it all so you bit off each others heads as I would cleanly interprets it.

Yet in this case, there's no such peribahasa in Malay and therefore this puisi loses its charm. Perhaps she could have done better by alluding to, "dengar guruh di langit, air di tempayan dicurahkan."

This is a rather popular and may serve enough context for Malay readers to relate and appreciate. Yes it's different, but you can't have your cake and eat it too.

p/s if you notice in my blog I have Roger McGough's Cake on my blog's sidebar :)

hi there..a blogger got me to check out some serious allegations here written in your site n honestly i have never heard of tht mcgough writer or read any of his poems..maybe it so happen to be wht i wrote is similar to wht he had written.n let me explain/define once more my childrens book in malay is written as short stories in so called poetic form,so they are not hundread percent poetry..its more of storytelling..only my english book is pure poetry..what i write is in a humourous & fun way..its not like im trying to educate children in an educational way..& for them to feel entertained & thts why there is illustration..tq

toughcookie said...

i think she thinks malaysian are dumb and wont read mcgough. heck. i have not heard about him either.

it's too much of a coincidence. merepek. you better send this to the papers >:)

Jannah said...

A.

Set the date.

Acat,

Context tak betul pun, when you read the malay version out loud it doesn't make sense. Why chocolate cake? What's she's trying to say? Kek Coklat as in Forrest Gump's "Life is like a box of chocolate. You'll never know what you gonna get?

Dila,

She commented. That's her stand. Tak satisfying in my humble opinion. AltaVista?

Anabanana,

I know you love this poem, I remember you used to place this poem at your blog's sidebar. Even my roomie Syitah said bukan this poem ada dekat blog ana ke?

The truth is in the Googling.

Ms Natasha Hudson,

1998. Were you in UK reciting this poem in the presence of Roger McGough?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/190291.stm

Toughmama,

Papers? I'm not a qualified translator, degree pun tak habis lagi. I want the proper people to deal with this. Only blogging about it atas permintaan my frantic friend who's favorite poet is Roger McGough.

If something like this happened to Neil Gaiman, I would personally cari that culprit. I love you Neil!

i abhore plagiarism. if you really like someone else's work, there is always a set of ethics being prepared for us to follow--just QUOTE! it is so shameful to be renowned person and yet to make such a public mess! i learnt a great deal from this. thanks jane!

Dila said...

yups2 Jannah, the explanation is not satisfactory. I am still not convinced. The only way where she said she didn't plagiarize nor heard of it, if her parents had read to her that poem when she was little as thus she have those on her mind.

Hope that's the case. Also a bit ruffled on some of her explanation, especially on the education part. But whatever. To each their own opinion. Just I don't agree with her's.

I credit her however in replying so fast to this allegation.

We'll have to refrain from buying hber book and tell other people not to buy it. Word of mouth is the best form of advert - or in thsi case, sales-killer. Ms Hudson, your answer was rambling and did not address the main issue.

Another way is to contact her publisher of course and have the book pulped.

Just Quote. We should start a revolution, a public announcement of sort. The years we had to deal with mastering the APA system my friend.

Dila,

"if her parents had read to her that poem when she was little as thus she have those on her mind". The lingering memories..that perfect 4 lines poem she can't get out of her head..each line with the similar context (though the malay one doesn't make sense because the context is foreign unless you're taking it literally. Ada term makan kek coklat yang I don't know about ke?).

En/Cik tanpa nama, saya yakin bangsa kita mampu;

Jangan kasar dengan bahasa. Bahasa tak pernah salah.
Si ketam tahu merasa.
Tapi jalan mesti ubah.

Another 2 plagariasm made by the utmost infamous Ms Natasha...

The Little Turtle (Vachel Lindsay)

There was a little turtle.
He lived in a box.
He swam in a puddle.
He climbed on the rocks.

He snapped at a mosquito.
He snapped at a flea.
He snapped at a minnow.
And he snapped at me.

He caught the mosquito.
He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow.
But he didn't catch me.

Si Kura-Kura Kecil (Natasha Hudson)

Ada seekor kura2 kecil
tinggal di dalam kotak
berenang di tepi tasik
memanjat di atas batu

dia cuba menggigit nyamuk
dia cuba mengigit kutu
dia cuba menggigit berudu
dia cuba menggigit aku

dia berjaya menagkap nyamuk
dia berjaya menangkap kutu
dia berjaya menangkap berudu
tetapi dia tidak berjaya menangkap aku

Mentega kuning, jelly ungu, jam merah, roti hitam

"Things We Like to Eat"

Yellow butter, purple jelly, red jam, black bread.
Spread it thick,
Say it quick.

Yellow butter, purple jelly, red jam, black bread
Spread it thicker,

Now repeat it,
While you eat it.

Yellow butter, purple jelly, red jam, black bread

Hello. I found this post via a friend of a friend's journal. Words just get around, heh.

Anyways, I make my living out of drawing (currently a storyboard artist for a local animated series). Even though I don't write, as an artist, or at least someone who constantly churn out ideas visually with her own hands, I do understand how frustrating plagiarism is. It's something that will inadvertently pop out here and there in the world of arts, and there's nothing more infuriating than seeing someone making a profit out of someone else's hard work.

It's thievery, pure and simple. There are laws made to protect a person's work and people fighting to have protection over their works simply because of matters like this: that someone can simply take/ modify another person's work and claim as claim it as their own.

It's wrong, simply WRONG. Perhaps a certain someone needs to be more aware of copyright law and not rob others of their rightful works and IP.

I'll link up this entry in my blog to share the love, if you don't mind :)

I think the publishers for Roger McGough should take legal actions on Natasha Hudson. Plagiarism is a very BIG offense.

Don't feel upset Natasha, we all need to be educated in an educational way.

OH! and 'si kura kura kecil' is believed to be taken from BARNEY! Oi, surrender je lah!

Rem said...

The worst part is not the unforgivable plagiarism. But rather her meaningless direct translation. The original version was a great parody, presented in the simplest but most elegant way. Natasha simply murdered it. We could have been more sympathetic had she plagiarised it in a cleverer manner!

Ms. Natsha, this is how it should be written in Malay:

Aku inginkan satu nyawa
engkau mahukan satu lagi
kita tak dapat keinginan sendiri
lalu kita saling berbunuhan.

Of course you can’t retain the word ‘kek’ because cake (as opposed to western culture, the British especially) is a meaningless metaphor as far as Malaysian culture is concerned. If anything, it only exposes your filthy act.

Natsha is a living proof that beauty and brain can't (in most cases) co-exist. Sad. Really.

A.O.S. said...

Kalau ye pun, the least she could have done was understand the context, then translate it in more proper inappropriate words. I mean, if you're gonna plagiarize, at least look as if you're trying to make it yours. So that you can defend yourself later? duh!
Its like eating a forbidden chocolate cake, with the cream all smudged on your lips, and when you get caught, you deny it without even bothering to wipe the cream. dude. kalau nak buat jahat, buatlah to the fullest ye. janganlah halfway. sungguh tidak interesting baca direct translation. sangat tidak bermakna. defeating the whole purpose of poetry. aduh.

Hi to owner of blog. I have been following this issue and was wondering whether or not u guys have wrote to publishers and authors of original poems. Also wondering whether you have written to newspapers. I do not have anything against Natasha Hudson. In fact from what I've heard she is a really nice person. However, I do not condone plagiarism and am really disappointed by what she has done. I would like it if Mrs Hudson could find some humility in her to apologize to the Malaysian public whom she has not so cleverly deceived.

I came across this post lambat lah. i heard abt the plagiarism but tau cmtu je la. x jumpe buku tu. poems can be nonsense but u can still find something out of it. ms hudson's work doesn't make any sense at all so it can't possibly come from her teenage years (duh. teenagers tau tulis poem cintan cintun/rebellious-suicidal-emo type je slalunye. cz that's how they feel at that age)

Cake by Roger McGough:

i wanted one life
you wanted another
we couldn't have our cake
so we ate each other.

Hudson's Kek Coklat:

Saya mahu satu kehidupan,
Kamu mahu sesuatu yang lain,
Kita tidak dapat makan kek coklat,
Jadi kita makan sesama diri.

Rem's translation of Cake:

Aku inginkan satu nyawa
engkau mahukan satu lagi

I come up with this mish-mash (utk jiwa horny):

Aku inginkan satu nyawa
engkau mahukan satu lagi
kita tak dapat keinginan sendiri
lalu kita 'makan' sesama sendiri

kita sama-sama puas *

* jgn pakai protection. boleh tambah nyawa satu lagi utk puaskan keinginan (nak nyawa lagi satu) dengan puaskan keinginan ('makan'). hehe...

Let me tell you something this is not abt bringing people down. This is a matter of principle. Do you not know that plagiarism is a big deal not just in Malaysia but most of the developed world??? People can get fired or sued because of this and you still think this is no big deal. I'll take it you either don't go to college or you slept your way through it if you do.

Who is bringing his/her own race down if not for Natasha Hudson herself? Feel sorry for her that she took us as idiots who don't know anything.

One tip for Natasha: Now that she's married to a rich man maybe now she can hire somebody smarter to plagiarize for her. Somebody that not only can translate but maybe also change one or few sentences considering she is incapable of doing the last part.
